Um Hong-gil Human Foundation and the South Jeolla Province Office of Education have established a school in the Nepalese municipality of Shankharapur, a remote village a 90-minute drive from the capital of Kathmandu. South Jeolla Education Superintendent Jang Seok-woong and Human Foundation President Um Hong-il attended the ceremony celebrating the completion of the school’s construction on Jan. 14, during which both pledged their support to keep the school running. Before the school’s foundation, children in the area had scarce opportunities for a proper education, and the existing high school lacked basic facilities and supplies. Um Hong-gil is a famous mountain climber turned philanthropist who has been working to establish schools in remote mountain villages throughout Nepal.
