새러 머리 여자 아이스하키 감독 “북한 선수 5명 기억나”

지난해 6월 단일팀 얘기 나와 비디오 본 적 있어
“2~3명은 도움되고, 5명 정도 인상에 남아 있어”
“선수 기용 권한은 감독에게 있어 압박 말기를”

새러 머리(30·캐나다) 한국 여자 아이스하키대표팀 감독이 2018 평창 동계올림픽에서 남북한 단일팀이 성사되면 북한 선수 2∼3명 정도는 도움이 될 수 있다고 했다. 또 북한의 선수 5명 정도를 기억한다고 말했다.

머리 감독은 16일 인천국제공항으로 입국해 곧바로 진천선수촌으로 이동해 본격적인 올림픽 대비 훈련에 들어갔다.

머리 감독은 단일팀 구성 안이 올림픽을 코앞에 둔 상황에서 이뤄지고 있으며, 북한의 선수들이 팀에 남한팀에 합류하는 것이 팀 조직력에 영향을 줄 것이라고 밝혔다. 그는 “우리는 이 상황을 관리할 수 없다. 선수들이 우리의 경기에만 집중하도록 해야 한다”고 했다.

그는 단일팀에 대해 부정적이면서, 몇몇 선수들은 도움이 될 수 있을 것이라고 밝혔다. 머리 감독은 ““2~3명의 선수는 우리팀에 들어오면 도움이 될 것이다. 5명의 선수는 기억에 남는다”라고 밝혔다. 이와 관련해 아이스하키 관계자는 “10명 정도의 선수를 받는 것은 무리가 있지만 6명 이내라면 합리적인 수준으로 생각한다”고 했다.

머리 감독은 외국팀들이 단일팀에 선수가 추가되면 다른 팀에 공평하지 않을텐데라는 질문에, “다른 나라는 분단된 남북이 단일팀을 구성하는 것은 좋은 일로 생각하고 이해할 것”이라고 말했다.

머리 감독이 꼽은 북한 선수 2~3명은 지난해 4월 강릉에서 열린 2017 국제아이스하키연맹(IIHF) 여자 세계선수권 디비전 2그룹 A(4부 리그)에서 만났던 북한의 선수들이다. 머리 감독은 “지난해 6월 단일팀 논의가 나왔을 때 코치진과 함께 북한팀 경기 영상을 돌려본 적이 있다. 북한 선수 중에서 수비수 2명과 공격수 1명은 우리 대표팀에 보탬이 될 수 있을 것 같다”고 했다.

머리 감독은 북한 선수 중에 기억나는 선수로 23번(원철순), 7번(정수현), 6번(김향미), 11번(박선영), 5번(김농금)이었다. 기량이 뛰어나서가 아니라 열정적으로 뛰는 모습이 인상적이었다고 했다. 특히 첫손으로 꼽은 원철순은 수비수로, 머리 감독은 그녀가 남북대결에서 우리대표팀의 슛을 육탄방어하는 모습에 깊은 인상을 받았다고 했다.

머리 감독은 “과거에는 북한이 강했지만, 이제는 우리가 북한을 가볍게 꺾을 수 있다. 분명히 우리에게 도움이 될 수 있는 선수가 몇몇 있지만, 우리 1∼2라인 또는 3라인에 들어갈 수 있는 수준의 선수는 아무도 없다”고 잘라 말했다. 아이스하키는 5명의 선수가 한 꾸러미가 돼 1분 안팎의 간격으로 투입된다. 주로 핵심적인 선수들이 앞 라인에서 뛴다. 머리 감독이 꼽은 5명의 선수들은 북한팀의 1라인 선수들이다.

머리 감독은 애초 “북한 선수 3명을 뽑아서 26명의 엔트리로 올림픽에 출전할 것으로 알고 있었다. 하지만 지금 어떤 얘기가 오가는지는 잘 모르겠다”고 했다.

머리 감독은 경기에 누굴 투입할지는 감독의 권한이라는 점을 분명히 했다. 그는 “나에게 북한 선수를 기용하라는 압박은 없길 희망한다”고 강조했다.

아이스하키 관계자는 “빨리 북한팀 규모가 발표돼 선수들이 집중해서 훈련했으면 좋겠다”고 말했다. 여자 아이스하키 단일팀 구성 방식과 숫자는 20일 토마스 바흐 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 위원장이 주재하는 아이오시, 남북올림픽위원회, 평창올림픽조직위원회 4자 회담에서 나올 것으로 보인다. 김창금 기자 [e-mail]

북한 선수 중에 기억 나는 선수들은?

As soon as I heard about the possibility (of one team) even in June, my coaching staff and I started watching some video and figuring out players we wanted added to our team. They do have some good players. Just players that play with a lot of heart, like blocking shots. They're hard nosed and they work really hard. We could potentially add some players and they could help our team, but adding 10 players is very difficult. We'll see.

단일팀에만 선수가 추가되면 같은 조 다른 팀에게 공평하지 않을 텐데?

I think the other countries are going to understand that this is a political statement. They understand that North and South Korea coming together through sports is a great story. I just wished it would have happened earlier.

북한 선수들이 합류하면 전력 상승 효과가 생기나?

There are a few good players on that team that could help us but our team has gotten so much stronger over the last four seasons. Before, we never had beaten North Korea and now we're beating them pretty easily. They definitely have players that can help us but I don't think they would have anybody that would infiltrate our first, second or third lines.

정부는 선수에 피해 없을 거라는데?

I think there is damage to our players. The players said in June not to make this a political statement and they just want to play the game. I agreed with them. We can't control the situation. We just need to focus on what we need to do to be successful.

이 상황을 어떻게 받아들이나?

I am kind of shocked this happened so close to the Olympics. After the talks were finished in June, I didn't think that it was going to come up again. When rumors were going around about this happening, I didn't really believe it. And it's getting more and more serious now. I was very shocked. Getting off the plane and being greeted by all these cameras, it's very serious.

북한 선수들 이름은 기억하나?

I don't the names. No. 23, defenseman, she's pretty good. When we played against them, she was blocking shots with her face. She's very intense. No. 7, No. 6, No. 11, No. 5. They have some players. But they wouldn't be first or second line players for our team.

북한 선수 뽑히면 선수 기용 하라는 압박이 있을 수도 있는데?

I hope that I am not being pressured to play. I am hoping we can just play the way we play and not have the influence of, 'I need to play this player.' I was thinking about it and I just want the best players to play. If you play your best, then you earn your ice time. Whether you're South Korean or North Korean, they have to earn their place.

이런 상황에서 얻을 수 있는 소득이 있을 까?

It's definitely a good story to have our teams come together through sports. On our team, we only have to cut one player for the Olympics, so our first and second line players are pretty comfortable. I do like the idea of adding a bit competition to the lines but it's different adding players this close to the Olympics rather than doing it 2 or 3 years ago. It's a very tough situation.

단일팀 되면 경기 운영 어떻게 할 건가?

I don't know what's happening. If we add 2 or 3 players, it should be okay to manage that. But making it 35 players is going to be really hard. I don't even think we can fit 35 players on the bench. We'll try to manage it the best we can. When this came up in June, we talked to our players and said, 'Your spots are secure. Don't worry about that. Just focus on what you need to do to be your best. Our players hopefully know that we're going to take care of them.

오늘 선수들한테 할 얘기?

We talk to them a lot about mental toughness. And this is a great test of mental toughness. Worrying about what you can control.. because things that are out of your control are distractions. We can't control this situation so we just have to worry about what we can control and make sure we do our best, so after the Olympics, we don't have any regrets and use this as an excuse as to why we didn't perform our best.

미국에 있는 동안 정부에서 얘기 들은 게 있나?

No, just messages from CBC and NBC, 'what's going on with North Korea?' Nothing from the government.

북한에서 몇 명 정도 오는 게 좋을까?

When this first happened, I wanted to do two defensemen and one forward. So 3. I didn't even know 10 was even on the table. I thought we were going to pick three and add 3 roster spots and carry 26 at the Olympics. But I don't really know right now.
